What Is a Moonlight Lodge? Ohio's Living Masonic Tradition
Before paved roads and electric lights stretched across rural Ohio, Masons faced a very practical challenge: how do you attend lodge when the meeting ends after dark and the journey home stretches for miles on unpaved roads?
The answer was simple and elegant — schedule your meetings by the light of the full moon.
The Origins of Moonlight Lodges
The tradition of "moonlight lodges" dates back to the early 1800s, when Ohio was still a young frontier state. Farmers and tradesmen who belonged to local Masonic lodges would plan their monthly meetings around the lunar calendar. The full moon provided just enough natural light to safely navigate roads, ford streams, and find their way home after a long evening of ritual and fellowship.
This wasn't unique to Ohio — moonlight lodge traditions existed across the rural Midwest and South — but Ohio's flat farmland and widely spaced communities made the practice especially prevalent and enduring.
The 12 Official Moonlight Lodges
What makes Ohio's tradition unique is that 12 lodges have maintained their official moonlight meeting schedules to this day, carrying a 200-year-old practice into the modern era. These lodges still schedule their regular communications to coincide with the full moon each month, honoring their founding brothers and keeping a living piece of Masonic history alive.
Each of the 12 lodges is located in a different part of the state, from the river valleys of southern Ohio to the farmlands of the northwest. Visiting all 12 is the heart of the Moonlight Journey.
Why It Still Matters
In an age of GPS navigation, LED headlights, and instant communication, why do these lodges still meet by moonlight? The answer lies at the core of Freemasonry itself — the preservation of tradition, the continuity of the Craft, and the connection between brothers across generations.
When a Mason attends a moonlight lodge meeting today, he participates in the same ritual his great-great-grandfather may have attended, under the same moon, in the same spirit of brotherhood.
The Moonlight Journey Certificate
The Royal Scofield Society created the Moonlight Journey program to encourage Masons and Masonic enthusiasts to experience all 12 lodges firsthand. Upon visiting all 12 lodges and documenting your visits, you can earn an official Moonlight Journey certificate — a tangible recognition of your dedication to Masonic history and travel.
