Lodge Spotlight: Western Sun No. 91 — Wheelersburg, Ohio
Nestled in the rolling hills of Scioto County along Gallia Pike in Wheelersburg, Western Sun Lodge No. 91 has been a cornerstone of Ohio Masonry for nearly two centuries. As one of the 12 official Moonlight Lodges, it draws visitors from across the state who come to experience its rich history and warm fellowship.
A Southern Ohio Gem
Wheelersburg sits just north of Portsmouth along the Ohio River, in a region of Ohio defined by its Appalachian character — wooded hills, tight-knit communities, and a deep tradition of fraternal life. Western Sun Lodge No. 91 has been meeting in this community since the 1800s, making it one of the older continuously operating lodges in the state.
The Moonlight Connection
Like all 12 lodges on the Moonlight Journey, Western Sun schedules its regular communications to align with the full moon. The tradition traces directly back to the lodge's founding era, when brothers traveling to and from the lodge by horse and on foot relied on natural moonlight to navigate the county roads safely.
Today, that tradition is honored as a mark of distinction — a living link to the brothers who established the lodge when Ohio was still frontier country.
What to Expect on Your Visit
Visitors to Western Sun No. 91 are greeted with the warm hospitality characteristic of Southern Ohio lodges. The lodge room itself retains much of its historic character, and the brothers here take pride in maintaining the traditions of their predecessors.
As with all Moonlight Lodge visits, it's recommended that you contact the lodge in advance to confirm meeting times and to ensure that a visitor's attendance is accommodated. Most lodges welcome traveling Masons and enthusiasts warmly, but advance notice is always appreciated.
